Waste management has become a major performance issue, extending beyond legal obligations. It is now a pillar of CSR strategy and ISO 14001 compliance, directly affecting business costs and brand image.
This 2-day course provides operational guidance for organising and optimising the entire process. You will learn to classify waste using categories such as DND, DD and DIS, manage traceability through registers and waste tracking forms (BSD), and organise sorting at source and safe storage.
The aim is to give you the tools to build an effective waste management plan. You will work on contractor selection, recovery pathways within the circular economy and source reduction strategies. You will leave with a method for turning a cost centre into an opportunity for environmental performance.
Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- identify and classify waste types, including DND, DID, DD and DIS, according to the applicable nomenclature and regulations such as the Environmental Code and ADR;
- establish a complete waste management plan, including mandatory traceability through a waste register and waste tracking forms (Bordereau de Suivi des Déchets, BSD);
- organise collection, sorting at source into 5, 7 or 9 streams, and safe storage through containment, labelling and risk management;
- write specifications, select and manage collection and treatment providers, and ensure the compliance of the waste management route;
- develop source reduction and prevention measures, and recovery through recycling, reuse and the circular economy, to optimise costs and performance.
Program
Module 1: understanding waste management fundamentals
- Definitions and waste types: hazardous, non-hazardous, special and organic.
- The national regulatory framework, including the Environmental Code, and standards such as ISO 14001.
- Defining the company's responsibilities as waste producer or holder and managing traceability.
Module 2: organising collection and sorting
- Applying sorting-at-source methods: waste streams and signage.
- Sizing internal collection systems and equipment.
- Managing flows and optimising collection routes.
Module 3: ensuring safe storage and transport
- Temporary storage best practices: containment and fire safety.
- Managing hazardous waste risks: labelling and incompatibilities.
- Transport obligations under ADR.
Module 4: implementing recovery and recycling
- Identifying recovery routes for paper, plastics, metals, organic waste and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).
- Specific treatment requirements for hazardous and special waste.
- Applying circular economy best practices through reuse and recycling.
Module 5: optimising management and reducing waste at source
- Conducting a waste flow audit and defining performance indicators.
- Implementing reduction and prevention strategies to avoid waste.
- Best practices for employee awareness and communication.
Practical exercises
- Develop a waste management plan for an office/service-sector or industrial site.
- Design a waste tracking table and performance indicators.

- Analyse and optimise a waste sorting system, identifying barriers and improvement opportunities.

Prerequisites
The following prerequisites apply:
- Professional experience: no mandatory experience is required. However, initial experience in maintenance, operations, general services or HSE is an advantage.
