A data analyst turns information into findings that help people understand an activity or make a decision. The role starts with clarifying a question, identifying suitable sources and checking what the data actually represents. Preparing and organising information is as important as producing an attractive chart or dashboard.
Sound data analysis involves checking missing values, duplicates and inconsistent definitions before calculating indicators. Analysts choose appropriate comparisons, explain assumptions and distinguish an observed relationship from evidence of causation. Their conclusions need to remain traceable to the sources and methods used.
Learning can develop querying, spreadsheet, visualisation and analytical skills, according to the tools used in the organisation. A useful exercise follows a question through preparation, exploration and presentation, then tests whether another person can understand the result. Limitations and uncertainty should be visible alongside the findings.
