Presentation
Digital media have transformed how we access information and read, particularly in journalism, where communication channels have changed profoundly. Journalists need to adapt to digital formats to continue their work. This course supports the transition from print-based editorial production to digital publishing.
Objectives
Organisation, time management and working practices: equip editorial teams to make the transition from a print newspaper to a digital-first, then print model.
Program
- Overview: how does a digital-first organisation work? Moving beyond dedicated editorial teams and understanding what changes from the traditional model.
- Reviewing journalistic fundamentals that apply to every medium: editorial policy, story selection, angles and length, writing to be read, elements readers scan first and the presentation of information.
- Writing for the web: the characteristics of digital information and communication, including continuous updates, text, audio, video and interactivity; choosing formats, editing for the web, and the principles and effects of search engine optimisation.
- Analysing and recommending changes associated with digital first:
- overall organisation: newsroom structure and layout, copy workflow, daily schedules and advance planning;
- editorial teams: evolving roles, time management, more collaborative working, relationships with sources and advance planning.
