IBM i: Implementing Web Services
Your services rely on systems whose operation must remain under control. With IBM i, connect commands, configurations and operations to work more methodically. Build independence and strengthen your contribution to running the environment.
- Duration
- 4 days 28 hours

Presentation
IBM i includes a web services server that enables organisations to open their information systems to external applications without compromising the stability of their RPG or COBOL programs. These programs can be exposed as APIs through modern REST or SOAP standards, while third-party services can be consumed directly from IBM i.
This practical course guides you through implementing a service-oriented architecture on IBM i. You will work with XML and JSON, create and administer secure web services, and integrate IBM i into interconnected environments using standard exchanges.
Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the fundamental concepts of SOAP and REST web services.
- Expose RPG/COBOL programs as externally accessible web services.
- Consume external web services from IBM i in RPG and SQL.
- Work with XML and JSON input and output on IBM i.
- Implement HTTPS and authentication for IBM i web services.
Program
1. Introduction to web services
- Principles of service-oriented architecture (SOA).
- Terminology: XML, JSON, SOAP, REST, WSDL, UDDI and API.
- IBM i use cases: exposing or consuming a service.
🧪 Lab: explore REST and SOAP calls using an external tool.
2. Working with XML and JSON on IBM i
- Parsing XML/JSON in RPG with XML-INTO and DATA-INTO.
- Parsing XML/JSON in SQL with XMLTABLE and JSON_TABLE.
- Generating XML/JSON with DATA-GEN in RPG and dedicated SQL functions.
🧪 Lab: read and generate XML/JSON files in RPG and SQL.
3. Exposing web services from IBM i
- Create a SOAP web service from an RPG or COBOL program.
- Create a REST web service on IBM i.
- Use the Integrated Web Services (IWS) server.
🧪 Lab: deploy an RPG program exposed through REST and SOAP.
4. Administering the IWS server
- The administration interface.
- Backing up, restoring, replicating and migrating services.
- Monitoring and diagnosing calls.
🧪 Lab: back up and restore a deployed service.
5. Consuming web services from IBM i
- Call SOAP or REST web services from an RPG program.
- Call external web services in SQL using UDFs and HTTP functions.
🧪 Lab: consume an external API, such as a weather or exchange-rate service.
6. Securing web services
- Implement HTTPS.
- Manage certificates.
- Authenticate using login credentials, tokens or HTTP headers.
🧪 Lab: deploy a secure service with authentication.
