Presentation
In 2026, the revision of ISO 14001 is redefining the practices of environmental and QHSE teams worldwide. Published in April after more than a decade, the new version strengthens expectations for environmental performance, risk-based thinking and the lifecycle perspective.
This course comprises two intensive days comparing the 2015 and 2026 editions clause by clause. You will explore the new climate change requirements, planning of changes and management of risks and opportunities through exercises closely aligned with the examination.
By the end of the programme, you will have the skills needed to transition an environmental management system to the 2026 edition. You will also be prepared to take the PECB ISO 14001:2026 Transition examination and earn PECB Certified ISO 14001:2026 Transition certification.
Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- explain the differences between ISO 14001:2026 and ISO 14001:2015;
- interpret the new concepts, requirements and recommendations of ISO 14001:2026;
- analyse developments relating to climate change, biodiversity loss and resource scarcity in the organisational context;
- incorporate the strengthened lifecycle perspective when identifying environmental aspects;
- plan and implement necessary changes to an existing environmental management system in accordance with clause 6.3 of ISO 14001:2026;
- prepare for and pass the PECB ISO 14001:2026 Transition examination to earn the PECB Certified ISO 14001:2026 Transition credential.

Module 1: comparing the changes between ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 14001:2026
- The revision context, new climate challenges and the structure adopted by ISO 14001:2026.
- Major differences between the clauses of the 2015 and 2026 editions.
- The strengthened approach to climate change, biodiversity and resource scarcity in context analysis.
- The expanded lifecycle perspective for identifying significant environmental aspects.
Practical exercises
- Compare an extract from an existing environmental management system with the new requirements of clause 6.3.
Module 2: planning and implementing the transition to ISO 14001:2026
- The revised approach to planning for environmental risks and opportunities.
- The new formal change management requirements under clause 6.3, Planning of changes.
- Practical steps for transitioning a certified environmental management system to the new edition.
- Preparation for the certification examination through quizzes modelled on the PECB examination format.
Practical exercises
- Develop a detailed transition plan to upgrade an existing environmental management system to ISO 14001:2026.
