In the age of zero downtime, a major IT failure or cyberattack can bring an organisation to a halt within minutes. A strategy for disaster recovery (DR) is no longer a technical option but essential to maintaining critical services.
This 4.5-day course develops the expertise to design, implement and lead an effective disaster recovery plan (DRP) using international best practices such as the standard ISO/IEC 27031:2025. You will learn to define ambitious recovery objectives (RTO and RPO) and coordinate technical teams for rapid, reliable restoration of IT infrastructure.
By the end of the programme, you will be able to turn technological complexity into a structured, auditable resilience strategy and coordinate teams effectively during an IT crisis. You will also be ready to take the official PECB Certified Lead Disaster Recovery Manager exam, included in our offering (see the Certification tab for details).
Objectives
By the end of this PECB Lead Disaster Recovery Manager course, you will be able to:

Day 1: Understanding disaster recovery concepts and frameworks
- Fundamental disaster recovery and IT resilience principles.
- Standards framework: ISO/IEC 27031:2025 and its relationship with ISO 22301:2019.
- Align DR strategy with organisational strategic objectives.
Day 2: Defining recovery strategy and business impact analysis (BIA)
- BIA applied to IT services and infrastructure.
- Risk assessment: identify cyber, environmental and technical threats.
- Define recovery time objectives (RTO) and recovery point objectives (RPO).
- Select recovery strategies: backup sites and cloud/hybrid solutions.
Day 3: Implementing and managing the disaster recovery plan
- Write DRP documentation and operational failover procedures.
- Implement data protection controls: backups, replication and high availability.
- Develop response capabilities and structure IT crisis management teams.
- Manage logistics and technical communication during plan activation.
Day 4: Validating, testing and improving the recovery system
- Organise and conduct different tests: simulations, live failover and cold tests.
- Measure performance and critically analyse results.
- Maintain operational readiness as organisational technology evolves.
- Continual improvement and preparation for a disaster recovery audit.
Day 5 (half-day): Preparing for the PECB Lead Disaster Recovery Manager exam
- Review the required exam competency domains.
- Overview of the official exam structure and format.
- Complete a practice quiz to validate theoretical knowledge.
- Methodological advice and tips for exam success.
