Safe handling operations depend first and foremost on the early detection of defects. This 2-day course is intended for operators and supervisors who want to develop the essential habits for confirming that their lifting equipment is fit for operation before each use.
You will learn to perform rigorous visual inspections and use standardised checklists to identify visible defects in critical components such as forks, wire ropes and hydraulic systems. The approach is firmly practical, with the aim of establishing a reliable inspection routine.
By the end of the programme, you will be able to complete the logbook and report detected defects. This operational discipline supports accident prevention and the long-term availability of your equipment.
Objectives
By the end of this Level 1 lifting equipment inspection course, you will be able to:
- perform mandatory safety checks before equipment is put into service and after shutdown;
- visually inspect structural and hydraulic components and running gear;
- test the correct operation of safety devices, the cab and protective systems;
- detect and report wear or defects in critical accessories, including wire ropes, chains and forks;
- complete the logbook and apply safe shutdown procedures.

Module 1: Understanding safety and inspection fundamentals
- Mapping major risks inherent in lifting and handling operations.
- The standards framework and the critical importance of daily operator checks.
- A structured approach to the key checks required before equipment is put into service.
Module 2: Inspecting structures and hydraulic systems
- Visual structural examination: identifying cracks, deformation and defective welds.
- Checking fluid levels, detecting leaks and monitoring cylinders.
- Checking the condition of tyres, wheels and running gear.
Module 3: Checking the cab and safety components
- Checking the operator environment: cab condition, visibility and protective features.
- Functional control tests: steering, braking, audible warnings and lighting.
- Checking safety equipment: seat belts, reversing alarms and emergency stops.
Module 4: Checking accessories and documenting follow-up
- Specific inspections of load-handling components: fork wear, chain tension and wire rope condition.
- Accurate logbook maintenance and the use of colour codes or compliance labels.
- Applying end-of-shift procedures: safe parking and appropriate PPE.

Prerequisites
