Presentation
In an industrial environment where equipment evolves rapidly, machine safety is essential to prevent serious accidents and maintain production continuity. This 2-day course equips you to identify mechanical hazards and deploy safeguards suited to real working conditions.
The programme comprehensively addresses the regulatory framework, including EC Directives and OSHA, and essential technical standards such as ISO 12100:2010. You will learn to assess risks, select appropriate protective devices, including fixed guards and non-contact safeguards, and structure lockout procedures for maintenance.
By the end of the course, you will have the operational skills to audit equipment and manage compliance across your machinery fleet. You will be able to create a safer environment for operators while meeting legal requirements.
Objectives
By the end of this machine safeguarding course, you will be able to:
- identify hazards and analyse risks associated with industrial machinery use;
- understand regulatory and standards requirements, including Machinery Directives, ISO and OSHA;
- select, install and verify the effectiveness of protective devices;
- implement rigorous lockout/tagout (LOTO) and safe release procedures;
- contribute actively to continuous improvement in work equipment safety.
Program
Module 1: Understanding machine safety fundamentals
- Industrial risk types: mechanical, electrical and thermal.
- Analysing accident statistics and real cases to understand the issues.
- General prevention principles applied to work equipment.
Module 2: Mastering the regulatory and standards framework
- Applying the EC Machinery Directive and international requirements such as OSHA.
- Understanding key standards: ISO 12100:2010 for design, ISO 13849-1:2023 for controls and ISO 14119:2024 for interlocking.
- The hierarchy of standards and their application in the local context.
Module 3: Selecting protective devices
- Characteristics of fixed, movable and adjustable physical guards.
- How light curtains, scanners and safety sensors work.
- Positioning emergency stops and two-hand controls.
Module 4: Deploying prevention and organisational methods
- Conducting a structured risk assessment on existing machinery.
- Integrating ergonomics and workstation organisation into safety.
- Implementing lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures.
Module 5: Maintaining and inspecting equipment
- A methodology for periodic inspection of guards and safety devices.
- Managing technical documentation and monitoring compliance over time.
- Maintenance's central role in preventing deterioration and accidents.
Module 6: Applying your learning
- Conduct a post-accident analysis to identify root causes of a machinery failure.
- Select the most appropriate protective device for a given situation.
- Simulate a safe lockout procedure.
Audience
This course is intended for professionals responsible for production equipment reliability and safety, including:
- HSE managers and prevention specialists leading safety policy and facility compliance;
- maintenance and production technicians working on machinery daily;
- supervisors and team leaders ensuring operators follow safety instructions;
- designers and integrators incorporating safety from the equipment design stage.
Prerequisites
The following prerequisites apply:
- Professional experience: experience in an industrial environment, such as maintenance, production or HSE, is useful for understanding scenarios.
- Basic knowledge:
- prior awareness of workplace safety rules;
- French reading and comprehension proficiency to follow the theoretical modules.
Teaching and assessment methods
- Initial skills assessment
- Training materials provided to participants
- Continuous assessment throughout the course
- End-of-course feedback questionnaire
- Combination of theory and practical application
- Attendance records
- Post-course follow-up evaluation
- Practical exercises
- Case study
Course highlights
- Field-based approach: learning prioritises practical cases and solutions directly applicable in factories.
- International framework: content draws on ISO, EC and OSHA requirements for broad compliance.
- Practical scenarios: workshops provide hands-on practice in risk assessment and lockout.
- Cross-sector applicability: methods can be applied in industry, energy and construction.
