Presentation
In high-risk process industries, safety management extends beyond preventing conventional occupational accidents to controlling catastrophic failures. This course enables professionals to develop a comprehensive understanding of international principles and best practices for industrial process risk management.
The intensive programme covers critical aspects of the industrial facility lifecycle, including asset maintenance strategies, safe plant start-up and shutdown, and emergency response protocols. You will explore hazards associated with chemical reactions, bulk storage of hazardous substances and explosion protection in detail. The emphasis is on safety leadership, ensuring that operational decisions systematically incorporate major risk management.
By the end of the course, your expertise will enable you to contribute actively to hazard control and strengthen your company's operational resilience. You will also be ready to take the official examination for the NEBOSH HSE Certificate in Process Safety Management. This qualification, classified at Level 4 (UK A-level standard), demonstrates your ability to implement international safety standards in sectors such as oil, gas, chemicals and pharmaceuticals.

Objectives
By the end of this NEBOSH PSM course, you will be able to:

Program
Module 1: Exercise process safety leadership
- Analyse the fundamental distinction between process safety and personal safety.
- Develop a positive safety culture through management commitment and visible leadership.
- Apply organisational learning through incident investigations and benchmarking.
- Implement a formal management of change (MoC) system to reduce risks to people and facilities.
- Consult workers and contractors on process safety.
- Define and maintain the competencies required to prevent major accidents.
Module 2: Manage industrial process risks
- Establish a process safety management system (PSMS) based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act model.
- Use risk management techniques such as HAZOP, HAZID, Bowtie and What-if analysis.
- Deploy asset integrity management, maintenance and inspection strategies throughout the lifecycle.
- Manage permit-to-work (PTW) and lockout/tagout (LOTO) systems rigorously.
- Ensure safe communication during shift handovers.
- Select and supervise contractors working at hazardous facilities.
Module 3: Master technical hazard controls
- Write and apply standard operating procedures (SOPs) within the safe operating envelope.
- Manage safe start-up and shutdown, including pre-start-up safety reviews (PSSRs).
- Maintain performance standards for critical systems using the FARSI concept.
- Identify utility-related hazards: steam, water, inert gases, electricity and static electricity.
- Manage hazardous substances and prevent uncontrolled thermal reactions.
- Optimise bulk storage safety, including tanks, bunds and chemical warehousing.
Module 4: Ensure fire protection and emergency response
- Analyse fire and explosion mechanisms, including BLEVE and vapour cloud explosions.
- Select fire detection and active and passive protection systems.
- Classify hazardous areas and select protected equipment.
- Prevent and mitigate combustible dust explosions.
- Develop and maintain robust emergency plans incorporating training and simulation exercises.

Please note: this course provides broad, operational understanding. It is not intended for specialist process safety engineers already experienced in facility design, specification and major maintenance, for whom the content would be too fundamental.
Prerequisites
The following prerequisites apply:
- Professional experience: experience in process industries such as oil, gas, chemicals or pharmaceuticals is strongly recommended.
- Technical skills: prior knowledge of fundamental occupational health and safety principles is required.
- Language skills: the ability to read and understand technical English, as NEBOSH HSE PSM documentation and the examination are in English.
