Presentation
How do you maintain the stability and security of a large-scale Kubernetes environment within an enterprise infrastructure? Containerisation underpins software agility and continuous deployment. As hybrid environments become more complex, you must ensure uninterrupted availability while maintaining precise control over access and the isolation of critical resources.
This course addresses the challenges of operating clusters that host business-critical applications. You will explore advanced OpenShift Container Platform 4.21 features to manage production environments to enterprise standards. The course develops your expertise in multi-tenancy, network traffic protection and add-on management through Operators.
You will be able to manage clusters securely, whether they host services from internal teams or external providers. You will learn to enable developer self-service while maintaining rigorous governance and monitoring. The course also prepares you for the official certification exam for Red Hat Certified OpenShift Administrator (EX280), providing formal recognition of your expertise (see the Certification tab for details).
Objectives
By the end of this Red Hat administration course, you will be able to:
- Deploy packaged applications using manifests, templates, Kustomize and Helm.
- Configure authentication and authorisation to secure user and application access.
- Protect network traffic through security policies and controlled service exposure.
- Administer and manage application life cycles using Kubernetes resources.
- Enable self-service so developers can manage their own projects.
- Manage critical cluster and Operator updates to keep the system sustainable.
- Prepare for the Red Hat Certified OpenShift Administrator (EX280) exam.
Program
Module 1: deploying complex packaged applications
- Using resource manifests for declarative management.
- Working with OpenShift templates and customisation tools.
- Deploying and managing application releases with Helm and Kustomize.
Practical work
- Complete the deployment of a multi-component application on a production cluster.
Module 2: managing authentication and authorisation
- Configuring identity providers for access control.
- Implementing RBAC to define user roles and privileges.
- Managing secrets and service credentials.
Practical work
- Configure a multi-tenancy strategy that isolates several teams.
Module 3: securing network traffic and service exposure
- Protecting internal traffic with Network Policies.
- Exposing services securely to external users with appropriate access controls.
- Applying granular network access controls to privileged applications.
Practical work
- Implement network filtering rules to isolate a critical service within a project.
Module 4: enabling developer self-service
- Configuring projects and resource quotas to support independent working.
- Managing permissions for CI/CD and monitoring tools.
- Enabling monitoring features for user projects.
Practical work
- Set up a secure self-service environment for an engineering team.
Module 5: managing maintenance and software updates
- The process for seamlessly updating an OpenShift cluster.
- Managing add-ons through Kubernetes Operators.
- Monitoring platform component health.
Practical work
- Upgrade the cluster and verify Operator integrity.
Audience
This course is for containerised infrastructure specialists, including:
- System administrators and platform operators responsible for day-to-day maintenance and development of production clusters.
- Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) seeking to automate monitoring and optimise Kubernetes cluster troubleshooting.
- Software and systems architects wishing to deepen their understanding of OpenShift security and isolation mechanisms.
Prerequisites
The following prerequisites apply:
