Whether you are starting work in a warehouse, occasionally using an access platform or aiming for a role as an elevating platform operator, one fact remains: working at height without training exposes you and your colleagues to real risks of falls or overturning. This 5-day MEWP course provides the technical and regulatory foundations for safe operation in accordance with French Labour Code requirements. You will receive a recognised certificate, an essential document enabling your employer to issue your operating authorisation. To achieve this, the programme provides comprehensive technical coverage of the applicable framework.
You will cover the entire R486 framework across all categories, from vertical to multidirectional elevation. Group A (types 1A and 3A) covers vertically elevating platforms, group B (types 1B and 3B) covers multidirectional platforms with horizontal outreach, and category C covers non-production operation, movement and loading onto equipment transporters. Each category is practised in realistic situations on professional equipment, under conditions similar to those encountered in the field. This methodical progression builds solid skills that can be applied immediately on returning to work.
By the end of these 5 days, you will be able to perform complex manoeuvres, including travel while elevated, rescue and emergency lowering, while observing load charts and warehouse safety rules. For entry-level logistics and maintenance operators, this is a springboard into logistics and finishing trades. For installers and technicians, it is a practical skills upgrade that broadens your responsibilities. For team leaders, it provides the field credibility to supervise teams confidently and enforce everyday preventive practices.
Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Module 1: understanding regulations and responsibilities
- The legislative framework: French Labour Code, CNAM recommendations and the Labour Inspectorate's role.
- Prevention stakeholders and employer obligations regarding operating authorisation.
- Operator responsibilities: safety obligations and legal consequences of an accident.
Module 2: classifying MEWPs and understanding their technology
- R486 classification: detailed study of groups A (vertical) and B (multidirectional) and category C.
- Equipment technology: structure types, elevation systems and controls.
- Safety devices: load limiters, inclinometers and emergency stops.
Module 3: applying general safety instructions
- Operating principles: platform access, harness use and personal protective equipment.
- Specific risks: power lines, overhead obstacles, wind and ground conditions.
- Energy management: battery charging and precautions for internal combustion engines.
Module 4: mastering stability and balance principles
- Physics concepts: centre of gravity, support polygon and the influence of outreach.
- Using load plates: reading charts based on the number of people and payload.
- Instability factors: overloading, wind effects and applied manual force.
Module 5: performing pre-shift checks
- Static checks: fluid levels, structural condition and tyres.
- Dynamic checks: testing emergency controls, brakes and lifting.
- Maintenance log: procedures for reporting faults and taking equipment out of service.
Module 6: performing driving and elevation manoeuvres
- Precision driving: ground travel, forward movement and reversing.
- Elevation operations: deployment at height and precise approach to the work area.
- Platform management: maintaining level positioning and safe distances.
Module 7: mastering traffic and transport rules
- Traffic plans: observing internal signage and marking out the operating area.
- Load transport: negotiating obstacles and gradients with the MEWP.
- Loading onto a trailer: fastening and securing rules for transport (category C).
Module 8: performing end-of-shift maintenance and storage
- Preventive maintenance: cleaning the equipment and checking charging devices.
- Safe parking: fully stowing the structure and disconnecting power.
- Reporting: communicating technical information and incidents to the maintenance manager.

Prerequisites
The following prerequisites apply:
- Age: be at least 18 years old to meet legal requirements for operating powered equipment.
- Physical fitness: have a favourable medical opinion confirming no contraindication to operating equipment and working at height.
- Language: basic written and spoken French to understand and apply safety instructions.
