Whether you are new to workshop operations, occasionally use lifting equipment or are seeking an overhead crane operator role, one thing remains constant: handling suspended loads without training exposes you and your colleagues to genuine crushing and falling-load risks. This 5-day overhead crane course provides the technical and regulatory foundations for safe operation in accordance with French Labour Code requirements. You will receive a recognised certificate, an essential document enabling your employer to issue your operating authorisation. The programme supports this objective through comprehensive technical coverage of the applicable framework.
You will cover the entire R484 framework for categories 1 and 2, from ground-level controls to cab and remote-control operation. Overhead cranes, gantry cranes and semi-gantry cranes: each type of equipment is tested in realistic situations using professional equipment, in conditions similar to those encountered in production facilities or storage areas. This methodical progression includes slinging techniques and load-swing control, ensuring solid skills that can be applied immediately on returning to work.
After these 5 days, you will be able to perform complex manoeuvres, including moving bulky loads, turning components and precision positioning, while observing load charts and industrial safety rules. For new forklift operators and workers, this is a stepping stone into heavy logistics and industrial employment. For maintenance personnel, it offers practical skills development that increases autonomy. For team leaders, it provides the practical credibility to supervise colleagues confidently and require sound everyday prevention practices.
Objectives

Program
Module 1: Understand regulations and responsibilities
- The legislative framework: French Labour Code, CNAM recommendations and the role of the Labour Inspectorate.
- Prevention stakeholders and employer obligations concerning operating authorisation.
- Operator responsibilities: safety obligations and legal consequences of accidents.
Module 2: Classify overhead cranes and understand their technology
- R484 classification: categories 1 (ground-level control) and 2 (remote control or cab).
- Equipment technology: structure, hoisting, cross-travel and long-travel mechanisms.
- Safety devices: travel limiters, anti-collision devices and emergency stops.
Module 3: Apply general safety instructions
- Operating principles: start-of-shift procedures, signalling and personal protective equipment.
- Specific risks: falling loads, collisions, electrical hazards and the working environment.
- Hand signals: master communication codes between the crane operator and slinger.
Module 4: Master stability and lifting principles
- Physics concepts: centre of gravity, load balance and forces in motion.
- Use load plates: interpret rated capacities according to lifting accessories.
- Instability factors: swinging effects, wind and overloading.
Module 5: Perform start-of-shift checks
- Static checks: visually inspect ropes, chains and hooks.
- Dynamic checks: test brakes, end-of-travel limiters and hoisting.
- Maintenance log: procedures for reporting defects and taking equipment out of service.
Module 6: Perform operating and handling manoeuvres
- Precision operation: unloaded and loaded movement along all three axes.
- Handling operations: lift, position and lower complex loads to the ground.
- Swing management: compensation techniques to stabilise moving loads.
Module 7: Master slinging and lifting accessories
- Choose accessories: use textile slings, chains, spreader beams and clamps.
- Slinging angles: effects of angles on sling tension and safety.
- Inspect accessories: check wear and CE marking.
Module 8: Perform end-of-shift maintenance and storage
- Preventive maintenance: clean accessible components and check lubrication.
- Safe parking: raise the hook and isolate the power supply.
- Reporting: pass technical information to the supervisor.

Prerequisites
