Whether you are starting in warehousing, occasionally use a truck or seek a materials-handling equipment operator role, one thing remains true: driving without training exposes you, colleagues and your employer to real risks. This 5-day forklift course provides the technical and regulatory foundations for safe operation under French Labour Code requirements. You will obtain a recognised certificate, essential for your employer to issue driving authorisation. The programme provides comprehensive technical coverage of the applicable framework.
You will explore all categories in the R489 framework, from the most accessible to the most technical: manual and electric pallet trucks (1A), stackers (1B), tow tractors (2A/2B), counterbalance forklifts (3 and 4), reach trucks (5), operator-elevating equipment (6) and non-production manoeuvres (7). Each category is practised in realistic situations using professional equipment under conditions resembling the workplace. This structured progression establishes solid skills directly applicable on your return to work.
After 5 days, you will be able to perform complex manoeuvres, high-level storage, heavy goods vehicle loading and operation in busy areas, respecting load charts and site traffic plans. For beginners, this is a direct route into logistics employment. For warehouse staff and order pickers, it broadens practical capabilities and responsibilities. For team leaders, it builds the operational credibility to supervise confidently and require sound warehouse safety practices every day.
Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Program
Module 1: Understanding regulations and responsibilities
- The legislative framework: the French Labour Code, CNAMTS recommendations and the labour inspectorate's role.
- Prevention stakeholders and employers' obligations for driving authorisation.
- Operator responsibilities: safety obligations and legal consequences of accidents.
Module 2: Classifying equipment and understanding its technology
- Detailed study of R489 categories 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.
- Truck technology: power units, hydraulic circuits, controls and brakes.
- Safety devices: operator guards, audible warnings and load limiters.
Module 3: Applying general safety instructions
- Operating principles: accessing equipment, wearing seat belts and using personal protective equipment.
- Specific risks: shared work areas, overhead obstacles and the working environment.
- Energy management: battery charging procedures and fuel precautions.
Module 4: Mastering stability and balance principles
- Physics concepts: centre of gravity, stability triangle and lever arm.
- Using capacity plates: reading load charts according to height and load offset.
- Instability factors: overloading, excessive speed and abrupt mast tilting.
Module 5: Performing start-of-shift checks
- Static checks: fluid levels and the condition of forks, chains and tyres.
- Dynamic checks: testing brakes, steering and hydraulic lifting functions.
- Maintenance logs: reporting anomalies and taking equipment out of service.
Module 6: Performing driving and handling manoeuvres
- Precision driving: travelling loaded and unloaded, forwards and in reverse.
- Handling operations: picking up and placing loads on the ground and in racking.
- Stacking and unstacking: pallet stacking techniques and high-level storage.
Module 7: Mastering traffic and transport rules
- Traffic plans: observing internal signage, right of way and safety distances.
- Load transport: negotiating ramps and doorways and managing cluttered surfaces.
- Truck loading: dock access, securing the vehicle and load distribution.
Module 8: End-of-shift maintenance and storage
- Preventive maintenance: cleaning equipment and checking charging devices.
- Safe parking: lowering forks to the ground, applying the parking brake and isolating power.
- Reporting technical information and incidents to the fleet manager.
