Developed by IBM® to meet the specific needs of technology organisations, the AIX® UNIX operating system is known for its security, performance and high availability. It also stands out for its System Management Interface Tool (SMIT), support for different computing architectures and adaptability to cloud environments. These are only some of its features, and a UNIX administrator planning to migrate to AIX will need to update their skills to master it.
This official IBM® course (AN14G) is designed for experienced UNIX system administrators. Over 5 intensive days, you will explore installation techniques, configuration procedures and administration features of the AIX operating system. These foundational skills provide a starting point for specialised IBM training in performance, partitioning, security and networking, among other areas. The course uses AIX OS versions 7.x, and every module includes hands-on practice.
Objectives
This AIX UNIX installation and administration course will enable you to:
- Perform a complete AIX UNIX installation, including filesets, package management and software.
- Start and shut down AIX UNIX safely.
- Explain the role of the Logical Volume Manager.
- Use administration tools such as System Management Interface Tool (SMIT) and IBM Systems Director.
- Manage physical and logical devices.
- Use and configure the Logical Volume Manager (LVM).
- Manage logical volumes and the AIX file system.
- Create a complete AIX system backup and perform a restore.
- Use system error logs to troubleshoot incidents.
- Configure AIX UNIX TCP/IP network services.

- Module 10: understanding file system operation and processes.
- Module 11: introduction to and use of the Object Data Manager (ODM).
- Module 12: understanding LVM metadata.
- Module 13: disk management and maintenance.
Day 4
- Module 14: backing up and restoring volume groups and file systems.
- Module 15: setting up and managing the AIX error log.
- Module 16: system initialisation ¹: understanding boot processes, managing failures and interpreting LEDs during system startup.
Day 5
- Module 17: system initialisation ²: understanding later boot processes and device configuration, reviewing common startup problems and diagnostic methods.
- Module 18: using the AIX system dump facility.
- Module 19: advanced AIX UNIX installation and update procedures.
Audience
This course is intended for:
- Experienced UNIX administrators who want to migrate to, or become familiar with, IBM AIX.
Prerequisites
To attend this AIX UNIX installation and administration course, you should:
- Have UNIX system administration experience.
- Be able to run basic UNIX commands to manage files and directories, use vi, redirection, pipes and tees, find and grep, command substitution and variables, define and modify shell and Korn variables, and write simple scripts.
- ¹Have completed Power Systems I: Planning and Configuring Partitions (AN11FR).
