Systems Administrator

A systems administrator manages the servers and workstations that support an organisation's activities. Installation, configuration, updates and troubleshooting are part of the role, alongside day-to-day checks on service availability. Responsibilities depend on the operating systems, infrastructure and division of work within the team.

Effective systems administration connects accounts, storage, processes and network services. An administrator needs to understand dependencies before changing a configuration and to distinguish symptoms from causes during an incident. The role often involves working with network administrators, database specialists, developers and IT management.

Learning can strengthen diagnostic reasoning, maintenance planning and the ability to document repeatable procedures. Practical work should address access permissions, backup and restoration checks, and the evidence used to confirm that a service works as intended. A successful command alone does not establish that an incident is resolved.
