Presentation
The new EU Regulation 2023/1230, replacing Directive 2006/42/EC, becomes mandatory in January 2027. This transition, often referred to as the 2027 Machinery Regulation, requires manufacturers, integrators and maintenance departments to master safe design principles.
This 2-day course is an operational guide to ensuring equipment compliance. It teaches you to manage the full process, from risk assessment methodology under ISO 12100 to validating control circuits under ISO 13849. You will learn to manage machinery modifications and compile mandatory documentation.
The aim is to equip you to apply these standards in practice. You will leave with a clear method for conducting a risk assessment, validating a safety chain and preparing a technical file or EC declaration to achieve compliance with the new requirements.
Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- apply the technical requirements of EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230, replacing Directive 2006/42/EC, from the definition of partly completed machinery to documentation requirements;
- conduct a structured risk assessment in accordance with NF EN ISO 12100, including assessment methodology, risk estimation and risk reduction measures;
- define, design and validate safety-related control systems (SCS) under NF EN ISO 13849, from Performance Level (PL) calculations to operating mode management;
- compile mandatory technical documentation, including instructions, a technical file and an EC declaration of conformity, and manage compliance when existing machinery is modified.
Program
Module 1: Understanding the new regulatory framework: Regulation 2023/1230
- How directives, laws and decrees fit together.
- Analysing the technical requirements of the French Labour Code.
- The transition from Directive 2006/42/EC to EU Regulation 2023/1230.
- Defining machinery, partly completed machinery and integration.
- Managing compliance when machinery is modified.
Module 2: Conducting risk assessment under ISO 12100
- Risk assessment methodology under ISO 12100.
- Identifying mechanical, electrical and other risks.
- Applying risk reduction measures, including inherently safe design and safeguarding.
Case study
- Apply the risk assessment method to equipment or a representative case.
Module 3: Designing safety-related control circuits under ISO 13849
- Control and power circuit principles.
- Designing safety chains, including emergency stops and guards.
- Analysing automatic, manual and maintenance operating modes.
- Requirements for energy isolation and lockout.
Module 4: Compiling compliance documentation
- Writing instructions in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Compiling the machinery technical file.
- Preparing the EC declaration of conformity or declaration of incorporation.
Audience
This course is intended for technical professionals responsible for work equipment compliance, including:
- design office engineers and technicians designing new machinery or modifying existing equipment to ensure compliance from the design stage;
- maintenance managers and technicians working on equipment and maintaining safety after modifications;
- methods and industrialisation specialists integrating new production lines and validating machinery compliance;
- capital projects managers overseeing acceptance of new equipment and ensuring the technical file is valid.
Prerequisites
The following prerequisites apply:
- Professional experience: experience in design, methods, maintenance or engineering is required to understand technical cases.
- Basic knowledge: a general understanding of industrial technologies is essential, including mechanics, electricity, hydraulics, pneumatics and automation.
Teaching and assessment methods
- Initial skills assessment
- Training materials provided to participants
- Continuous assessment throughout the course
- End-of-course feedback questionnaire
- Combination of theory and practical application
- Attendance records
- Post-course follow-up evaluation
- Practical exercises
- Case study
Course highlights
- Ready for 2027: a complete analysis of the impacts of the 2027 Machinery Regulation, EU 2023/1230, replacing Directive 2006/42/EC.
- Dual expertise in ISO 12100 and ISO 13849: master the two core safe-design standards, from risk assessment under ISO 12100 to control circuit calculations under ISO 13849.
- Operational approach: alternate theory with practical examples, including operating modes and lockout, for immediate application.
- Tailored case study: work through a complete risk assessment on equipment from your company or a relevant training case.
