Archivist / Documentation Specialist

An archivist or documentation specialist organises information so that it can be preserved, located and used by the right people. Records may include documents, photographs, audiovisual material and digital files. The role combines the analysis of collections with the creation of reliable descriptions, helping users understand what is available and the context in which it was produced.

Effective information organisation relies on consistent classification, appropriate metadata and clear access rules. Professionals assess preservation needs, maintain finding aids and support searches while taking account of confidentiality and retention requirements. Digital tools can improve retrieval, but their value depends on the quality of the underlying records and procedures.

Useful skills include document management, digital preservation and user support. Select relevant Oo2 training by checking the programme, intended audience and prerequisites against the collections, systems and responsibilities in your own organisation.
