Presentation
Control Language programming (CLP) underpins scripting and automation on IBM i. It allows you to manage operations, launch processing, handle errors and work with files directly within the system's native environment.
This course enables IBM i operations staff, console operators and administrators to create and maintain their own CLP programs using traditional tools such as PDM and SEU, or modern tools such as RDi and Visual Studio Code. A progressive learning approach and numerous practical exercises help participants quickly become independent in automating routine tasks and controlling their IBM i environment.
Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Use the main IBM i development tools: PDM, SEU, SDA, RDi and VS Code.
- Write, modify and run Control Language programs (CLP/CLLE).
- Work with variables, conditional structures, errors, files and external calls.
- Understand good practices for developing operational automation.
Program
1. The IBM i development environment
- Using PDM (Program Development Manager).
- The SEU editor and SDA menu.
- Introduction to RDi (Rational Developer for i) and Visual Studio Code.
🧪 Lab: navigate PDM and edit CLP source with SEU.
2. Writing CLP programs
- The structure of a CL program.
- Declaring and assigning variables with DCL and CHGVAR.
- Arithmetic and string operations.
🧪 Lab: create and run your first interactive CL program.
3. Conditional and control-flow statements
- IF, ELSE, DO, DOUNTIL, DOWHILE, FOR and SELECT.
- External calls with CALL and TFRCTL, and using subroutines.
🧪 Lab: implement a logical flow with conditional statements.
4. Built-in functions and string handling
- Functions including %SST, %LEN, %TRIM and %SUBST.
- Concatenation, extraction and dynamic manipulation.
🧪 Lab: advanced string manipulation in a CL program.
5. Error and message handling
- Handling system messages with MONMSG and SNDPGMMSG.
- Triggering actions when an error occurs.
🧪 Lab: simulate processing with conditional error handling.
6. Files and databases in CLP
- Using files in CL programs.
- OVRDBF and OVRPRTF statements for redirecting input and output.
🧪 Lab: use a database file in CL with an override.
7. Global variables and communication areas
- Using data areas (DTAARA).
- Reading, writing and modifying shared areas.
🧪 Lab: share information between two programs through a DTAARA.
8. Debugging and observability
- Interactive debugging with STRDBG.
- Batch debugging, breakpoints and stepping.
- Execution monitoring and logging.
🧪 Lab: analyse a program containing errors with the debugger.
Audience
Operations managers, console operators and IBM i administrators.
