Programming fundamentals with Python and Java
Your first Python and Java developments should connect algorithmic thinking with application requirements. Use Java to structure your development approach and relate technical choices to expected behaviour. Build your independence in designing, testing and evolving applications.

Presentation
In a digital world, knowing how to code is becoming as fundamental as reading or writing. This intensive 3-day course takes you behind the scenes of programming from day one, exploring Python and Java together, the two most in-demand languages on the market.
Discover algorithmic thinking by comparing the flexibility of an interpreted language, Python, with the rigour of a compiled language, Java. From variables and loops to object-oriented programming (OOP) and file handling, every concept is immediately put into practice through concrete examples.
At the end of the course, you will complete a small end-to-end project, such as a task manager or data analysis application, consolidating your new technical skills and your ability to tackle future development projects independently.
Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- understand fundamental programming principles and algorithmic thinking;
- master the basic syntax and control structures of Python and Java;
- apply object-oriented programming concepts, including classes, methods and inheritance;
- work with files and complex data structures, including lists, arrays and dictionaries;
- develop and debug functional mini-projects to demonstrate your learning.
Program
Day 1: introduction to programming logic with Python
- Key concepts: compilation versus interpretation, variables and data types.
- Control structures: conditions (if/else) and loops (for/while).
- Code organisation: defining functions and using standard modules.
Hands-on exercises
- Develop a small calculator in Python to work with variables and conditions.
Day 2: structuring development with Java
- Java program syntax and structure, including classes and the main method.
- Strong typing, compilation and Java-specific control flow.
- Object-oriented programming fundamentals: classes, objects, encapsulation and inheritance.
Hands-on exercises
- Create a Person class in Java to explore object modelling.
Day 3: extending your skills through comparison and practice
- File handling: reading and writing in Python and Java.
- Data structures: lists and dictionaries in Python versus arrays and ArrayList in Java.
- Best practices: using IDEs such as VS Code, PyCharm and IntelliJ, and handling errors.
Hands-on exercises
- Complete a final mini-project of your choice: a contact manager or unit converter.
Audience
This course is intended for anyone starting out in development, including:
- programming beginners seeking a solid foundation in Python and Java;
- students or professionals moving into development careers;
- recruitment and HR professionals who want a better understanding of technical skills.
