In Africa and worldwide, organisations increasingly face questions about the social and environmental impacts of their activities.
Within increasingly international value and supply chains, every organisation must improve, or help its partners improve, against recognised international frameworks considered alongside local regulations.
This course is designed for senior executives and managers wishing to improve their organisation's practices in response to customers, funders and other stakeholders, as well as those involved in assessing and monitoring suppliers or companies in which they wish to invest.
Objectives
Whether assessing their own organisation or a partner, such as a supplier or a potential investment, participants will gain:
- Awareness of opportunities and risks associated with social and environmental challenges.
- Knowledge of the main international frameworks covering human rights at work, health and safety, and the environment, and their content.

Part 1: international standards and local laws — what do they mean?
- Key topics addressed in social and environmental assessments.
- Key international assessment frameworks: Global Compact, OECD, ILO, ISO standards, OHSAS and others.
- An exercise comparing frameworks with local West African laws, with country-specific adaptation possible.
- Reconciling local laws and international standards.
Part 2: practical study of key assessment topics
- Approaching social assessment through ILO conventions.
- Approaching environmental assessment.
- Approaching management system assessment.
- Exercises and simulations: role plays, virtual visits and more.
Part 3: key assessment principles, reports and visit follow-up
- Preparing an assessment programme.
- Communicating with the assessed entity and demonstrating the benefits for both parties.
- Key principles of on-site diagnostics and audits; the importance of the human factor.
- Reading a visit summary or report.
- Approaching follow-up and the improvement plans to be implemented.
