Presentation
IoT, or the Internet of Things, is gaining momentum. It seems that one day even a toothbrush may want to communicate. With whom? To say what? So far, nobody really knows.
As a concept and technology offering solutions similar to home automation or the machine-to-machine market, IoT aims to underpin the third Internet revolution, also called Web 3.0, by extending connectivity to objects and vehicles.
Objectives
This course explores the radio and network solutions that allow objects to communicate with each other. Existing technologies can be optimised to meet these needs, including ZigBee, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, as well as established GSM technology, which holds a substantial share of the M2M market and aims to remain competitive in IoT through EC-GSM, an evolution optimised for IoT requirements. New solutions are also emerging, such as LoRa and Sigfox. Finally, 3GPP, with its globally adopted LTE/LTE-A standard, contributes D2D solutions and, in particular, NB-LTE, also called NB-IoT.
