Presentation
Server hardening combines techniques designed to strengthen system security by reducing vulnerabilities. This course teaches security hardening practices for Red Hat Enterprise Linux. It forms part of the preparation for the Red Hat certification exam in Server Hardening and the Red Hat Certified Architect (RHCA) certification pathway.
Objectives
This course develops your understanding of Red Hat Enterprise Linux security hardening in line with security policy requirements. Security standards require system administrators to strengthen protection across areas such as user authentication, updates, system auditing, logging and file system integrity. You will acquire the knowledge and skills to harden a Red Hat server through theoretical modules and practical exercises in realistic situations. The course prepares you for the Red Hat certification exam in Server Hardening (EX413) and forms part of the Red Hat Certified Architect (RHCA) certification pathway.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Review errata and apply them to Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
- Use special file system permissions and access control lists.
- Manage password ageing and user policies.
- Install and configure Red Hat Identity Management tools.
- Perform system auditing.
Program
- Tracking security updates: Understand Red Hat Enterprise Linux updates and use yum to identify available errata.
- Administering software updates: Manage and apply system updates.
- Creating file systems: Learn to allocate an advanced file system layout and encrypt it.
- Managing file systems: Use security options and file system attributes to adjust their properties.
- Administering special permissions: Use sticky (SVTX), set user ID (SUID) and set group ID (SGID) permissions, and locate files with these permissions.
- Administering additional file access controls: Use file access control lists and change the default permissions applied to files and directories.
- Monitoring file system changes: Configure software-based file change monitoring.
- Administering user accounts: Configure password ageing and audit user accounts.
- Administering Pluggable Authentication Modules (PAMs): Enforce different types of user policies with PAMs.
- Securing console access: Adjust console service properties to enable or disable security settings.
- Installing centralised authentication: Install and configure the Red Hat Identity Management server and client.
- Administering centralised authentication: Configure Red Hat Identity Management policies to control user access to client systems and additional user privileges.
- Configuring system logging: Configure remote logging with transport-layer encryption and manage additional logs generated by remote systems.
- Configuring system auditing: Enable and configure system auditing.
- Controlling access to network services: Manage firewall rules to restrict connectivity to network services.
