An enterprise architect, corresponding here to the French profile Urbaniste SI, plans the evolution of an information system in relation to business needs. The role provides an overall view of processes, applications, data and technology so that individual projects contribute to a coherent direction. It focuses on relationships and change over time, not on urban or building design.

Effective enterprise architecture makes the current situation and target direction understandable to different stakeholders. Architects map dependencies, identify duplication and propose transition stages that take existing constraints into account. Shared models and documented principles help teams discuss trade-offs without prescribing every implementation detail centrally.
