Presentation
This advanced course develops all the skills needed to administer mixed Linux networks. It prepares you for LPIC-2 201-450, the first requirement for LPIC-2 certification from the Linux Professional Institute.
Over 5 days, you will begin with system resource planning and management, and Linux kernel configuration. You will then explore advanced boot settings and file system configuration, before addressing advanced storage management, network configuration and Linux maintenance.
The course concludes with a mock examination to assess your understanding of every topic covered. You will also receive the LPIC-2 learning kit, containing a notepad, a pen with a highlighter and the official LPIC-2 certification preparation book.
Objectives
The objectives of this LPIC-2 201 course are to:
- Identify hardware configurations and estimate resource requirements according to usage.
- Build a customised kernel and manage its modules.
- Identify and customise the boot process.
- Configure advanced file systems.
- Manage block storage and volumes.
- Install and configure network services.
- Perform preventive system maintenance.
- Supervise colleagues and advise on administration and the automation of purchasing processes.
- Pass LPIC-2 201-450 and continue your certification pathway.
Program
Plan system resources
- Assess hardware resource and bandwidth usage, identify problems and resolve them.
- Monitor resource usage to anticipate future requirements.
Modify the Linux kernel
- Implement different types of kernel images.
- Understand kernels and patches for stable and long-term releases, and use modules.
- Compile and recompile the kernel.
- Update the kernel and investigate changes in a new kernel.
- Create an initrd image and install new kernels.
- Manage or query a 2.6.x, 3.x or 4.x kernel and its loadable modules.
- Identify and resolve common boot and runtime problems.
- Detect and manage devices with udev.
Customise system startup
- Use the init command together with init-related kernel options.
- Understand system loading errors and use GRUB 2 and GRUB Legacy boot loaders.
- Explore other boot loaders and their main features.
Configure file systems and devices
- Configure and mount different file system types.
- Work with standard file systems and monitor SMART devices.
- Configure automatic mounting of local and network file systems with AutoFS.
- Create file systems for CD-ROM devices.
- Use encrypted file systems.
Configure advanced storage
- Create and configure software RAID (0, 1, 5, etc.).
- Use kernel options to manage different hard disk types.
- Use software tools to view and modify disk settings, including iSCSI devices.
- Create, delete and resize logical volumes, volume groups and physical volumes.
Configure advanced networking
- Configure a network interface card for a wired or wireless LAN, or a wide area network (WAN).
- Configure a network interface card to implement different authentication methods.
- Resolve communication problems.
- Locate network configuration files and use basic commands.
Perform system maintenance
- Build and install executable programs from source code.
- Perform partial and manual backups.
- Verify backup file integrity.
- Restore backups partially or in full.
- Inform users about system-related problems.
- Automate communication through login messages.
- Send maintenance notices to active users.
Prepare for the LPIC-2 201-450 examination
- Take a mock examination and review the answers.
- Take the official examination:
- Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes.
- Format: multiple-choice questions.
- Number of questions: 60.
- Languages: English, German, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese and Spanish.

Prerequisites
