Presentation
AIX is an operating system developed and distributed by IBM (International Business Machines Corporation). Based on Unix, it is designed to run on IBM server families (System p, System i and System z), as well as desktop computers with PowerPC processors.
Like any other OS, AIX has many distinctive features, particularly for enterprise and mainframe environments. It is therefore important to understand how this system works and how to administer it on an IBM Power Systems architecture server.
This course for system administrators introduces the installation, customisation and administration of AIX. Through numerous labs, you will put what you learn into practice in a partitioned multi-user environment on Power Systems.
The skills acquired on this AIX II Power Systems course (AN12G) will enable you to progress to more advanced training in partitioning, system management or network configuration.
Objectives
By the end of the Power Systems AIX II course, you will achieve the following skills objectives:
- Install the AIX operating system file system and RPM packages.
- Start and stop AIX.
- Understand AIX management tools and use the System Management Interface Tool (SMIT).
- Administer physical and logical devices.
- Understand the role of the Logical Volume Manager.
- Manage logical volumes and file systems.
- Create and modify user and group accounts.
- Back up and restore system data.
- Use Cron to schedule system tasks and create security functions providing specific access to files and directories.
- Configure TCP/IP networking.
- Configure and update the kernel on a running AIX LPAR.

Prerequisites
The Power Systems AIX II course requires the ability to:
- Log in to an AIX system and set a user password.
- Run basic AIX commands.
- Work with files and directories.
- Use the Vi editor.
- Use redirection, pipes and tees.
- Use the find and grep utilities.
- Perform command and variable substitution.
- Set and change Korn shell variables.
- Write simple shell scripts.
