Presentation
AIX is an operating system developed and distributed by IBM (International Business Machines Corporation). Like any other OS, AIX has many distinctive features, particularly for enterprise and mainframe environments. It is therefore important to know how to configure it and resolve incidents on an IBM Power Systems architecture server.
This course develops the skills of AIX system administrators, focusing particularly on availability and incident resolution. You will learn to make better use of the ODM database and address logical volume management issues, including disk replacement procedures.
After each lesson, you will complete practical exercises and discover techniques to reduce the frequency of maintenance operations. The course includes the latest changes to AIX 7.2, although most topics also apply to earlier system versions.
Objectives
By the end of the Power Systems AIX III course, you will achieve the following skills objectives:
- Identify system malfunctions and produce reports, including error log analysis, system memory dumps and forwarding information to AIX technical support staff.
- Analyse and manage Object Data Manager databases.
- Identify and resolve inconsistencies between Logical Volume Manager (LVM) disk structures and the Object Data Manager (ODM).
- Configure Network Installation Manager to support network booting for system installation or maintenance-mode startup.
- Identify various boot and disk failure scenarios and perform appropriate recovery operations.
- Apply advanced methods such as alternate disk installation, multibos and JFS2 snapshots to reduce maintenance time.

- Experienced system administrators seeking to deepen their skills in supporting AIX operating systems in a Power Systems environment.
Prerequisites
The Power Systems AIX III course requires the ability to:
- Use the Hardware Management Console (HMC).
- Install IBM AIX using an already configured NIM server.
- Perform AIX backups and restores.
- Perform basic system and additional software updates.
- Use management tools such as SMIT.
- Manage file systems, logical volumes and volume groups.
- Use the UNIX user interface, particularly the Vi editor, run commands, redirect input/output and use grep.
