Presentation

IBM® PowerVM is a high-performance virtualisation technology available on servers with IBM Power processors. It combines software and hardware features to deliver flexible, secure virtualisation services. PowerVM represents both evolution and innovation, which explains its widespread deployment in businesses worldwide.

On this course, you will learn to configure advanced IBM PowerVM features, such as Active Memory Expansion, shared dedicated processors and multiple shared processor pools. You will also discover new availability and performance management features, such as simplified remote restart, hybrid network virtualisation and enhanced VIOS administration through the HMC.

Finally, you will use AIX performance analysis and optimisation tools to make the most of shared processor resources and other available virtualisation features. Practical exercises are also provided to explore each lesson in greater depth and gain immediate experience.

Objectives

By the end of the IBM PowerVM II course, you will achieve the following skills objectives:

  • Describe the performance impact of POWER and PowerVM technologies such as Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), Multiple Shared Processor Pools (MSPP), micropartitioning, dedicated processor resource sharing, Active Memory Expansion (AME), Active Memory Sharing (AMS) and other features.
  • Interpret output from performance measurement and tuning tools such as vmstat, iostat, smtctl, sar, curt, mpstat, topas and lparstat in a virtualised environment.
  • Describe and configure new VIOS features such as shared storage pools.
  • Describe, configure and use Live Partition Mobility to migrate a running AIX or Linux partition from one physical server to another without interrupting applications.
  • Describe and configure AME.
  • Describe and configure AMS, a technology that allows multiple partitions to share a pool of physical memory resources.
